Château Montaud

“A page of history, a place of life, a land of wine. Nestled at the foot of the Maure Mountain, the Chateau Montaud, with its two thousand years’ worth of history, is, since 1951, property of the Ravel family.”

The setting is the third century C.E., during the Pax Romana. At the foot of the Maure Mountain, miners searching for silver set their camp in a vast plain. Living self-sufficiently, they quickly built a hillside dam, a fort, a mill, and a cave and press. So begins the history of Montaud.

Several centuries later, a chateau appears. It is not spared by the troubled history of the plateau - it was demolished and reconstructed numerous times, the last being in 1858, when the chateau was rebuilt in the purest Florentine style. It is still standing there, with green shutters on red ochre walls and a roof whose red tiles have faded in the light of the Sun. This 150 years-old building watches over other historical relics: the Roman Chapterhouse and the cave, which have long since stopped counting their years.

Built upon long sun-bathed terraces, Chateau Montaud’s vineyard houses multiple provincial varieties of grapes - grenache, cinsault, tibouren, syrah, rolle and sémillon. The viticulture there is traditional and work on the soil is privileged. This keeps freshness in the thin soil, forcing the vines to extend their roots deep underground. Edified around forty years ago, the cave has evolved with the years, now using modern tools essential to the elaboration of high-quality wine. Today, the chateau’s products, bottled in its cave, are exported around the entire world and are found on the most prestigious tables. Its wines are saluted by the international media, be they stamped “Côtes de Provence” or “vins de cépage”.
